From FoxNews:
WH to unveil $1B plan to expand health care workforce
Holy cow! Another $1B that we do NOT have! The Super Committee is seriously considering taking the "automatic across the board cuts" away since they cannot agree, which means, all we have done is moved right back to square one. I agree that health is a field that is short on workers in virtually every state in the nation. However, instead of using this money to train additional RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and a host of other acronyms I cannot remember, they plan to give the money to doctors and organizations that deal with Medicare and Medicaid. Wait, what? The government is going to give this money to the folks who take this insurance to "offset" the reduction in payments instituted by the government? Give me a break! If you want to expand the healthcare work force, then do it by investing in people who NEED jobs, not organizations. How many people could we put to work by taking that $1B and training unemployed Americans in the health care field? And remember, they get jobs, they pay taxes, giving you a return on your investment. Come on Washington, WAKE UP!

okay simple math to pay for a year of nursing education $1B will train 1,000,000,000 new CNAs, LPNs or convert LPNs to RNs
That is assuming 1 year of technical school costs $1,000
Another Scenario says okay papa barry will pay your bills for that year
Puts that number to 40,000,000 new people to that job market
Someone is profiting methinks.
Now someone did have a very interesting concept for a jobs stimulus (this was about the time of the first stimulus package) was to offer every American worker over the age of say 55, you could raise this up to 60 a $1m retirement bribe, in taking that 1M and agreeing to retire, and agreeing not to return to work for say a minimum of 10 years could almost take care of the unemployment problem.
It was a very interesting concept and while it would have been wild spending still it would have put those $$$ into the pocket's of consumers who would .... get this spend the money putting it directly into the economy.
Now I didn't complain when Bush II gave out the simuli or so, but it was only a temporary boost to the economy, people got their $400 or $500 and went and bought something, I know W bought me a nice 1911.
Its still crazy spending of $$$ we do not have but at least it would put that $$$ into the voter's pockets rather than making some guy at Solindra pocketing $.5 B
Awesome how a little common sense could virtually eliminate both the labor shortage in the healthcare field and seriously lower the unemployment rate huh?
I want to see more on this plan before I start blasting it completely. Maybe there is something I'm missing, but I kinda doubt it knowing our government.
One issue with health-care LPNs and lower levels and especially EMTs have a high burn out rate they will go and practice Nursing but the hours and shifts will wear on the individuals and they will drop nursing for other unrelated fields.
Of course another thought on Health-care is this we have MILLIONS of Americans that are getting older, the baby boomer's are, well... were starting to retire, and many of those will need elder care..... saddle that with the void created by mass retirements and lack of skilled medical personnel we may have a problem, in that Populations may decline... not many of my generations are having families of 8 or 7 Children where both sets of my grandparents did. Maybe if the government doesn't interfere in a bad manner it may correct itself somewhat.
